Kenny's teams do not value the basketball, and each possession, the way that good teams do. I shouldn't compare coaches, but just look at the way Mike Young's freshmen value each possession, while executing some crazy good ball movement. There will usually be more turnovers with that style of play, but Young's teams have mostly managed to keep the numbers down. I've noticed on this years women's team we have a lot of unforced errors when trying to lob the ball to the low post, in heavy traffic, where the ball is up for grabs. Not a high percentage pass.
As for the free throws, we've had teams that are much better at this. I do believe they spend much time on reps and individual technique. Sometimes, it just comes down to how well you handle nerves. I once had a teammate who never missed a free throw in practice. He's the one you think you would want at the line, to win the game. Not so much. In game situations, he shot 50/50 at best, from the line.
Why won't Kenny use his time outs? We were playing FSU even, until mid-second quarter, when FSU went on a run and never looked back once. We had 3 time outs to use. Let's use them all. There were no teaching moments or individual coaching opportunities available during that span? If not, how about using them to disrupt the opponents momentum, while giving our team a breather?
All that said, I remain optimistic, because I see the potential with this team. Go Hokies!
